Many routes to Porvoo!
There are many ways to get to Finland's second oldest city: by car or bus, or in summer also by boat, ship, train, motorcycle or bike. At fastest the journey from Helsinki to Porvoo takes less than an hour.
By road
The most direct route is by the motorway, but the Helsingintie and Kuninkaantie (Old King's Road) bring back memories of historic times. The view of the city opening up from the Old Bridge is still almost unchanged, as it was seen by the King's messengers or postmen arriving in the town.
Porvoo is conveniently located on Highway E18, a short drive from the Helsinki metropolitan area. The trip takes about 30 minutes. Buses run regularly between Helsinki and Porvoo.
Other routes
The sea route is a pleasant alternative, passing through the peaceful archipelago and along the busy riverside. You can either use your own boat or get on board at Helsinki Market Square. There are two possibilities: the almost 100-year-old m/s J.L. Runeberg and the m/s RoyalCat.
A railway line was built to Porvoo at the end of the 19th century, financed by forward-looking businessmen. The same spirit of enterprise is shown by the museum line operators of today. The journey to Porvoo on the old steam engine or railcar is really fun.
