Porvoo Lights 2026
- 06.02.2026
- 18:00 - 21:00
1. Porvoo Cathedral – The Deep

An underwater world is created in the Porvoo Cathedral. Large organza fabrics will serve as screens for video projections that include both filmed and edited material as well as drawn animation. The work aims to provoke thoughts about how our surrounding waters – especially the Baltic Sea and the rivers flowing into it – are constantly changing. What will our relationship with the sea become if its poor condition prevents us from enjoying it? What kind of world opens up beneath the surface?

2. Jokikatu – On the Wave of Light
Everything in the universe is vibration – sound, energy, even us. And of course, light. On the Wave of Light is an interactive installation designed to visualize the subtle vibrations of light, reminding us that it’s always there, guiding and protecting us – if we just take a moment to notice. The installation features 100 vertical light sticks illuminating as visitors walk by and gently fading out once they’ve passed, leaving a glowing trail behind.

3. Old Town Hall Square – Divine Geometry

Divine Geometry is a profound experience, acting as a guide for deep inner journeys. The installation features lasers arranged in a ring, creating an intense, psychedelic experience. A major element is the specially composed audio track, created in collaboration with award-winning Latvian sound engineer Pēteris Pāss. Divine Geometry explores the complexity and harmony of the natural world. The ring symbolizes life, nature, and the mathematical beauty that connects all living things.

4. Runo Hotel courtyard – Noesis
Noesis is a multimedia installation combining video, dance, sculpture, light, and spatial sound. The work creates a multisensory experience in which, on video, a dancer pulls a sculpture like a rope from one projection to another. The viewer moves between the inner courtyard of Runo and the inner courtyard of the VPK building, realizing that the two images form a single whole.
The work’s surreal soundscape and layered visuality open up the space for deeper experience and observation. Noesis refers to a Greek concept meaning spiritual seeing and insight.

5. Fredrika Runeberg park – Family tree
In old paintings and engravings, one often finds a realistically drawn, strong tree symbolizing the family tree, with representatives of different generations of the family living on its branches. The installation utilizes the beauty and structure of a fine tree by placing light human figures on the branches so that the timeline is revealed from bottom to top; generations change, clothing and hairstyles become increasingly modern. The work consists of metal sculptures that glow in the dark. The figures appear delicate, reflecting the fragility of human life. The atmosphere of the installation is maintained by a soundscape designed by Petri Laakso.

9. Market square – Shining Fields

What if the night had dreams of its own – strange, glowing, and full of motion? Shining Fields invites you to experience that vision come to life. Light reeds, arranged like wild stalks in an open field, pulse with shifting waves of colour. A coordinated light show flows through the space, accompanied by a rich, layered soundscape. Light and sound move in sync, creating a calm and rhythmic atmosphere – something between wind, breath, and thought.
From close, the experience feels immersive and otherworldly. From a distance, the entire installation appears to glow and move, somewhere between reality and imagination.

13. Lyseonpuisto – Mystical Garden
Mystical Garden transforms the façade opening onto Lyseonpuisto park of Borgå Gymnasium and the entire park into a magical world of light. The work is built on powerful moving lights, neon-like colors, and elements that play with floral patterns. The façade not only glows in the lights but seems to project it into the surrounding park.
The experience is multidimensional and can be viewed from several directions—either from a distance outside the park, where the whole appears as a large landscape installation, or from the center of the park, where the viewer is immersed in the movement of light and color. “Mystical Garden” is like a mysterious oasis, offering visitors joy, vibrancy, and a magical atmosphere. It is a work that invites people to linger and marvel—a festival of light suitable for all generations.
