Acrylic and Watercolour Works by Susanna Sinivirta
Galleri Skolan, Kråkö, June 3–29, 2025

The language of birds is song. They sing regardless of the state of the world, and in spring, their song can be heard in all weather. The long polar night in the North quiets even the birds, but somewhere in the world, a bird is singing—even then.

”My works are landscapes of the mind, born from a dialogue with nature and my longing for light. I observe nature and the landscape every day. Shapes, surfaces, the nuances of light and shadow, the changing seasons, and shifting moods continuously inspire me. Birds may not always appear in the paintings, but perhaps you can still hear their song.”

The exhibition invites the viewer into three distinct moods: from the darkness of the polar night, through the forest, and finally into the light. The artworks were created between 2020 and 2025, and most of them are being exhibited for the first time.

Susanna Sinivirta (b. 1976) is a visual artist and illustrator based in Helsinki. Her work often interprets nature, the seasons, and birds, painted in either watercolours or acrylics.

Layering and playfulness characterize her painting style. She is fascinated by different surfaces and textures and often paints her acrylic works using a palette knife, revealing layers by scratching into the paint.

For Susanna, painting is an important way of processing different emotions, where the canvas becomes a receptive surface. Alongside nature-themed work, grief, memory loss, and aging have also been present “on her worktable” in recent years. Even when the themes are heavy, she seeks to convey hope through her art—one of her most deeply held values.

Sinivirta’s illustrative work can be found in children’s books and in the many greeting cards she has designed for her own collection as well as for publishers such as Linnapaperi.
