~~Double Negative
23.5.-29.6.2025
Michal Czinege and Maija Laurinen explore intricate phenomena between perception, reality and the observer. Their site-specific and time-based installation ≡ ~~Double Negative at Gallery Fikka employs media such as light and sound in relation to matter. A stone at the centre acts as a sonde to what falls beyond means of direct human perception. Czinege and Laurinen make space for perspectives that challenge the human-centric and often routine-like ways in which we interpret reality. Yet, ≡ ~~ Double Negative doesn’t disclose what is happening. A sensation of blue is transparent, a stone becomes a fragile perceptual event. Low sound waves travel through matter, a shadow radiates light.
Michal and Maija met while studying in Bratislava. Maija studied cinematography at the time, for Michal fine arts had always been a clear path to take. Since then, both have earned their Doctor of Arts degrees from the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava (2011 and 2019). Nowadays the Slovak-Finnish couple live in Puu-Nurmes at the heart of a small North Karelian town with their rescue dog Possu, who moved with them from Slovakia.
