Ryoichi Kurokawa: syn_mod.n

Ryoichi Kurokawa (b. 1978, Osaka) is a Berlin-based audiovisual artist and composer. He is known for his video installations and concerts, in which he synthesises sound and image into an immersive whole.

At the Art Hall’s Fikka this summer, the works syn_mod.1 (2013), syn_mod.2 (2014) and syn_mod.3 (2015) are on view; they are parts of his 2011 audiovisual concert syn_. Kurokawa has described that original work, and everything restructured from it, as ”ordered disorder, reassembled discretisation and asymmetrical symmetry.” In each module, quick glimpses of abstract imagery combine with a pulse of sound: the eye catches patterns, even faces, but the pace never lets a single reading settle.
