Art School Guidelines for Families

For Students

Lessons

With the exception of the Art’s n’ Music School family groups, children attend art school lessons independently. Parents may wait in the school lobby if they wish. This ensures a calm working environment for both the group and the teacher.

Please arrive on time, but no earlier than 5–10 minutes before the lesson begins. Waiting space at the art school is limited, and the teacher usually lets students into the classroom only at the start of the lesson.

At the beginning of each lesson, the teacher explains the day’s assignment. If you arrive late, you will miss the instructions, and starting your work may feel difficult. Cleaning up your own workspace is part of the lesson.

Please inform the teacher directly if you need to leave early or arrive late.

Mobile phones may only be used during lessons with the teacher’s permission, for example for assignment-related or other instructional purposes.

When the lesson ends, the teacher prepares for the next group. Students are therefore expected to leave promptly at the end of the lesson.

Clothing

Clothes may get dirty at art school. Wear clothing that does not need special care. Indoor slippers are necessary, as there may be paint stains or clay on the floor. The art school does not compensate for stained clothing. Sometimes lessons take place outdoors, in which case weather-appropriate clothing is required.

Snacks

Bring a small snack. A snack break will be held at a time agreed upon with the teacher. Snacks provide energy and help with concentration. Sweets and soft drinks are reserved for special celebrations at the art school.

Student Absences

Please notify your teacher or the school office in advance if you will be absent. Unreported absences may result in losing your study place.

Lessons missed due to pupil absence are not compensated. If you need to be absent for an extended period (e.g., for health reasons), please contact the school office.

Please do not attend lessons when you are ill.

Teacher Absences

If a teacher is absent, substitute arrangements will be made. Cancellations will be communicated as early as possible. Cancelled lessons will be rescheduled.

Tuition fees will begin to be refunded after two cancelled lessons. Refunds are generally issued at the end of the school year and/or when studies end.

Student Work and Exhibitions

Students receive the artworks they have created at the end of the term. The art school organizes both an autumn and a spring exhibition each year, where at least one work from every student is displayed. Exhibited works must be collected from the school or exhibition venue at a separately agreed time.

The art school does not have space to store old student work. Please always write your full name and group on your artwork so that forgotten pieces can be returned to their creator.

Documentation and Image Use Rights

The art school documents pupil work and completed pieces. Images are used in school and City of Porvoo brochures, announcements, websites, and possibly other publications related to art education. If images are used in products for sale, usage rights and possible compensation will be negotiated separately.

Permission to use images of students’ work and working process for the above purposes is requested at the time of enrollment. The permission remains valid until it is withdrawn in writing.

For Families

The Joy of Creating

Students generally enjoy their art school hobby. According to a school survey, students of all ages found creating artwork to be the most enjoyable aspect. Good friends and kind teachers were the second most enjoyable. The least enjoyable experience was when someone disturbed the lesson. A student who repeatedly disrupts lessons or behaves inappropriately may be dismissed from the art school. It is important that everyone can concentrate on learning and assignments. All students have the right to a peaceful working environment, and this is given special attention.

Studying the Language of Images

At art school, the working process is more important than the final result. Rather than focusing solely on producing artworks, pupils develop a variety of visual skills. They learn to use different materials, work collaboratively, and appreciate both their own and others’ work. As creativity and self-expression develop, so does the ability to interpret visual culture.

Benefits of Art as a Hobby

Studying at art school strengthens fine motor skills, concentration, self-esteem, expressive ability, and teamwork skills. These are valuable in school and in other hobbies. The impact of art studies may become visible later in life, for example as a continued art hobby or even in career choices.

The Importance of Parental Support

A child’s line is sacred – The art school respects each child’s individuality and unique way of expressing themselves. Parental interest and encouragement show the child that their skills and personality are valued. Both parents and children should remember that the journey toward personal artistic expression is long and includes many stages.

What If the Child Does Not Enjoy It?

Like any hobby, sometimes a child—or their parents—may notice that the child is not enjoying it. This may appear as frustration, low mood, or disruptive behavior during lessons. If you notice that your child is not enjoying art school, please contact the teacher or the principal. It benefits everyone to reflect on the situation together and seek the best possible solution.

Language of Instruction

The languages of instruction at the art school are Finnish and Swedish. Groups are bilingual.

Safety and Insurance

Please inform us of any allergies at the time of enrollment. If there are any health or life circumstances that should be considered in teaching, please inform the teacher or the principal. Student matters are handled confidentially.

The art school primarily uses non-toxic materials. Teachers are responsible for the use of solvents or other potentially harmful substances and materials.

Students are insured against accidents. The insurance is valid during lessons, exhibitions, and study trips. During the school year, it is also valid on school premises and during normal travel routes to and from school. Accidents must be reported to the school office as soon as possible.

Absences and Discontinuation of Studies

Unreported absences may result in losing the study place.

A student will also lose their place if the previous term’s tuition fee has not been paid by the start of the next term.

If a student discontinues their studies during the school year, this must be reported by email to the school office. The vacant place may then be offered to a new student.

A gap year may only be taken for special reasons, such as illness or a temporary family relocation. Otherwise, the study place will be given to another student.

Keep Contact Information Updated

For possible emergencies and lesson cancellations, the art school must have up-to-date contact information. Please keep your contact details current in your Eepos account.

Donations

The art school accepts donations. If you have suitable materials to donate, please contact the school office.

Feedback Is Appreciated

The art school strives to develop its activities to meet the needs of students and families. Surveys and feedback forms are used for this purpose. Feedback can also be sent directly to the school office by email.
