Sweeping Robot
A sweeping robot operates in central Porvoo, autonomously cleaning the streets and paved areas in the Market Square and at the riverside, mainly at night.
Topical information
The sweeping robot will begin operating in Porvoo Market Square and at the riverside in August 2026. The operating area will be expanded gradually based on usage experience.
Questions and Answers
How does the robot monitor its surroundings? Is it safe?
The sweeping robot monitors its surroundings using sensors and stops when it encounters an obstacle, like a vehicle or a person. The robot also has a backup system for stopping when it encounters obstacles.
In addition, continuous remote monitoring allows the robot to be redirected to a new route and, if necessary, the remote monitoring centre can access the camera system.
The sweeping robot is equipped with 3D lidars (laser scanners), as well as safety radars. It meets the requirements of the relatively high PLd machine safety classification.
What should you do if you come across the sweeping robot?
On the roadway
If the sweeping robot is moving along a roadway, you can pass it in the same way as if it was working machinery. Please note that the robot may stop from time to time.
If the robot is about to cross a pedestrian crossing and has already started moving, let it finish crossing so that it does not stop in the middle of the crossing. Remote monitoring assists the robot when it crosses pedestrian crossings.
On the sidewalk
On the sidewalk, you can walk past the machine by keeping to the edge. If it is not possible to pass the robot side by side, choose an alternative route.
How does the sweeping robot work?
Before the sweeping robot is put into operation, a detailed digital map of its working area is created using satellite positioning and 3D point cloud mapping technology. The map enables the robot to navigate accurately and determine its location throughout Porvoo city centre.
The robot’s sweeping routes are then programmed in accordance with the sweeping plan prepared by the City of Porvoo. The mapping and route programming are carried out by Trombia Technologies’ experts and fleet services team.
The robot follows its assigned routes according to schedule. As it works, it continuously monitors its surroundings, detects obstacles and adjusts its route to changing conditions. The robot travels at approximately 4 km/h while sweeping, runs on carbon-free electricity, and removes both fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and other loose debris from the streets.
