Voting in participatory budgeting starts on 13 April
This year, Porvoo’s participatory budgeting focuses on the youth living in the city. Everyone was able to submit ideas, but young people in particular took an active role in the ideation process in schools and in specially organized workshops. Voting begins on 13 April.
Ideas covered a wide range of themes
During the idea phase in February, a total of 147 ideas were submitted.
– The proposals were responsible, creative and well justified. Many ideas also showed careful consideration of implementation and costs, which was great to see. Proposals were submitted evenly across themes such as sports, schools, premises, urban infrastructure, culture, and youth services. The library also received a few suggestions, says Lead Youth Worker Tanja Lehtikuusi.
Many ideas shared common themes, including equipment for the moped workshop, drink and snack vending machines as well as lockers and sofas for schools, basketball courts in different parts of the city, graffiti walls, and a large concert or band event in Porvoo. By combining similar ideas, a diverse set of proposals was compiled for the voting phase.
The ideas submitted in February were reviewed in March by an evaluation group consisting of city experts as well as representatives of the council for older people, the disability council and the youth.
At this stage, ideas that did not meet the evaluation criteria were excluded, for example because they were not within the city’s jurisdiction. Due to the large number of similar proposals, several ideas were also merged. In the end, 21 ideas advance to the voting phase.
– A lot of effort was once again put into planning and formulating the ideas, and we would like to thank everyone who participated. The process has also been strongly participatory among city employees, says Participation Coordinator Maija Eklöf.
How voting works
The voting period runs from 13 to 26 April. Each person may vote once and select ideas with a total value of up to 50,000 euros. A cost calculator is available during voting to show the costs of the selected ideas. You may vote for as many ideas as the budget allows.
Voting takes place electronically via the ePorvoo service. It is also possible to vote using a paper form at Porvoo libraries and at Porvoo Info (Lundinkatu 8).
How to vote electronically
First, register as a voter. After registering, you will receive a voting link by email.
In the ePorvoo service, you can also explore the ideas that have advanced to the voting phase and browse the ideas that did not proceed to voting. The service also includes voting results from previous years.
