Advanced Studies, Ages 12–19

Advanced visual arts studies begin at age 12. These studies deepen the knowledge and skills acquired in basic education and further develop independent visual expression. Instruction is workshop-based.

Students choose a workshop for one academic year at a time from the art school’s offerings, which include workshops in general visual arts, product design, and media art. The aim is for students to explore a wide range of different areas of art.

Final Project

Advanced studies include the opportunity to complete a final project. The student must be at least 15 years old and have completed at least 800 hours of basic studies before beginning the final project.

The final project is an independently executed artistic project. In it, the student demonstrates their skills and maturity in a chosen area of visual art. The final project forms a complete entity consisting of an artwork or series of artworks, a portfolio documenting the working process, a self-assessment related to the project, and participation in an exhibition.

The final project highlights the student’s artistic strengths, expressive power, and ability to work independently. The student prepares a work plan and schedule for the project. The art school appoints a supervisor for the final project. The project is assessed through a written evaluation.

In advanced studies, the student learns to:

  • deepen their skills and knowledge in one or more chosen areas of visual art or visual media
  • practice and develop their visual expression and combine expressive methods from different art forms in their work
  • study the history of visual art, compare different artistic phenomena, reflect on fundamental questions of aesthetics and art philosophy, and examine developments in art history and contemporary art
  • explore unfamiliar cultures and the visual expressions of different cultures
  • become familiar with materials and working methods that promote sustainable development
  • learn about the work and working methods of professionals in visual and other visual arts
  • take into account a client’s wishes in product design
  • plan and carry out work tasks independently
  • complete guided homework assignments
  • publicly present their working process and its results
  • monitor their own learning and evaluate their own and others’ work
  • independently complete a final project that includes an artwork, a portfolio documenting the working process, and a self-assessment related to the project
